How to benefit from a top MBA programme

In 2006 and 2007 the Managing Director of iProCon Sven Ringling attended a two years executive MBA programme (part time) at Cranfield School of Management in the UK. A major investment of time and money for a small firm, but the return is considered worth the investment. Here is in a nutshell how Sven perceived the programme:

"It was certainly one of the most intense experiences I’ve ever been through. The promise of a 'life changing experience' was no exaggeration - even my high expectations were exceeded. As all other top business schools, Cranfield teaches all the 'hard facts', such as finance, economics, operations, etc. What sets this programme apart are two points:

  • Different business functions are not taught as silos, but in a very integrated way. This provides a very holistic view of the organisation - the only way to work successfully at a strategic level.
  • The emphasis on personal development and organisational behaviour was outstanding. Understanding yourself as well as others better helps to develop much better teamworking, communication and leadership skills.

I also met a lot of extraordinary people. Having a diverse set of fellow students with a lot of business experience makes a huge difference in discussions and team projects. Two of them are now my business partners at iProCon Human Capital Management Ltd., which we set up together after the course to help organisations to master the people side of strategy: www.iproconhcm.co.uk.
As a whole, the programme was challenging, sometimes exhausting, but still good fun. I never would have thought before, I could still learn so much at my advanced age"

There is no one best MBA programme - there’s only the right programme at the right time for each individual. If you are undecided whether to embark on a programme and how to choose your school, Sven is happy to talk about his experience and decision process. Just drop him a line: s.ringling@iproconhcm.co.uk.

He can also be approached for advice by HR professionals who want to use an MBA as part of their talent development program. All too often an MBA is offered instead of rather than as part of a career plan, which leads to many students leaving the sponsoring organisation.
